In 1913, the Florida Legislature established Seminole County and, originally, the Seminole County Jail was located on South Palmetto Avenue in Sanford. As Seminole County's first sheriff, C.M. Hand, ran the operation.

However, the Seminole County Jail on Palmetto was not as secure as it could be; a prisoner had escaped when he was able to get his hands on a saw and cut his way out. So not long after, a new Seminole County Jail was built behind the courthouse in downtown Sanford. The "new" Seminole County Jail was "saw proof" and the "new" Seminole County Jail was reportedly the most modern structure available. That structure served as the Seminole County Jail until 1961, when a more modern Seminole County Jail was built.

Tragically, in 1975, 10 of the 65 inmates and one deputy died in a fire at the Seminole County Jail. As a result, Seminole County built the Seminole County Jail complex (now known as the John E. Polk Correctional Facility) that opened at Five Points in 1980.

The first Seminole County Court, "opened" in Sanford, when Seminole County was established, in 1913. At the time, all civil and criminal matters were heard at the same Courthouse. That was also the case with the second Seminole County Court which opened in 1919 and with the third Seminole County Court which opened in 1972.

However, in 2004, the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center opened its doors. Now, all adult criminal cases tried in Seminole County are tried at this Courthouse.
