Mount Dora is named after the Lake Dora nearby. In turn, Lake Dora was named after an early homesteader by
the name of Dora Ann Drawdy. Dora and her husband Jim had established their homestead two miles south of
present day Mount Dora. It is said that in 1846, government surveyors came across the Drawdy's cabin and Jim
and Dora provided the surveyors with their warm hospitality. In appreciation for the hospitality, the surveyors
named Lake Dora after Mrs. Drawdy.
The first homesteader in Mount Dora, though, was David Simpson. Simpson and his family had moved to Mount Dora in 1874. However, the town was not originally named Mount Dora. In 1880, one of the early Mount Dora settlers, a man by the name of Ross Tremain, became the postmaster. At the time, Mount Dora was known as Royellou, after Tremain's three children, Roy, Ella, and Louis.
In 1883, the town was officially named Mount Dora. But Mount Dora was not incorporated as a town until 1910. Mount Dora had 371 residents at the time and it took the next 20 years for Mount Dora's population to double. Then, in 1953, Mount Dora was incorporated as a city. Today, more than thirteen thousand call Mount Dora home.
