You may be seeking political asylum because you have been harmed by the government of your country or by a group the government in your country cannot control. Or perhaps you are seeking other immigration relief.

Perhaps you and your family have been in Sanford for many years and have now encountered some obstacles that may affect your legal permanent residence / green card.

Or perhaps you are seeking Temporary Protected Status to remain in Sanford because your country has an ongoing armed conflict or has been devastated by a natural disaster and it would not be safe to return right now.
As you may know, if an individual who resides in Sanford would like to file a civil case, he or she would likely do so in Seminole County because Sanford is, of course, located in Seminole County. Similarly, a criminal case would also likely be filed in Seminole County if the alleged crime took place in the city of Sanford.

But, there is no similar rule regarding where a deportation case will be heard. In Immigration Court, wherever the government files the charges, that is where the
deportation case is heard. This can potentially cause unanticipated problems.

Take for example an individual who is stopped for speeding in Sanford. If the immigration authorities decide to take him or her into custody, immigration can take the individual to a detention facility in Texas, California, or anywhere in the United States, and file the case there.

The city of Sanford was founded by American diplomat, businessman, and lawyer, Henry Shelton Sanford. Sanford was a direct descendant of Thomas Welles, colonial governor of Connecticut.

Sanford began his work as a diplomat in 1847, at the ripe old age of 24, when he was appointed Secretary of the American Legation in St. Petersburg. Subsequently, Sanford held a number of other diplomatic posts including one in Frankfurt, Germany, and another in Paris, France. Then, in 1861, Sanford was appointed the United States Minister to Belgium. Sanford was President Lincoln's first diplomatic appointment. Sanford maintained this post until 1869.

In 1870, Sanford purchased the 23 square mile "Sanford Grant" and subsequently founded Sanford. In 1875, Sanford built two hotels, the Sanford House and the Monroe House. Shortly thereafter, in 1877, Sanford was incorporated as a city.

In 1913 the Florida Legislature established Seminole County with Sanford as the county seat. Today, Sanford has a population of over fifty three thousand residents.
