If you live in Seminole County and need the help of a
Seminole County Criminal Defense Lawyer... We Can Help You
State civil cases are typically filed with the Court in the county in which one of the parties lives. However, criminal cases are not filed with a particular Court based on where a person lives. Criminal law cases are typically filed and tried in the venue, that is, in the county, in which the criminal offense was allegedly committed.
There are cases, however, in which the prosecution does not know the precise physical location where the criminal offense was allegedly committed.

Pursuant to the Florida Constitution and to Florida Statute, in those types of cases, the person may be charged in two or more counties conjunctively. Then, the acused would have the "privilege" of electing in which of those counties he or she wants the trial to be held and would then present his or her
criminal defense in the county selected.

So, if a person is accused of a crime that was allegedly committed in Seminole County, the state criminal case would typically be filed with the Seminole County Court and the person, with the aid of their criminal defense lawyer, would defend against the allegations there.

This would likely be the case even if the person actually lived in another county or another state. So the fact that a person lives in Seminole County, or anywhere else for that matter, is irrevelant to where a criminal case will typically be filed and tried.

This applies to adult misdemeanor and felony criminal cases and to
juvenile delinquency or juvenile defense cases as well.

Naturally, the State would still have to prove venue.

Before Seminole County was established, the area that today comprises Seminole County was part of Orange County with Mellonville (now part of Sanford) as its county seat. However, in 1856, the county seat was moved to Orlando.

In 1875, Henry Sanford, founder of the town of Sanford, made an appeal to the Orange County Commission to move the Orange County seat to Sanford. The County's rejection of Sanford's plans began a rivalry of sorts, and for years thereafter, the creation of Seminole County was often discussed. Then in 1912, the discussions regarding the formation of Seminole County gained momentum and in 1913, the Florida Legislature established Seminole County. After the split, the old rivalry subsided and residents from both counties celebrated the creation of Seminole County.

Sanford became the Seminole County seat and the newly formed Seminole County saw "fireworks." Wanting to celebrate the birth of Seminole County, the residents rolled out a cannon that was traditionally fired on special occasions. Unfortunately, the eager Seminole County residents overloaded the old cannon and when they fired it, the old cannon blew apart. Today, that cannon barrel, now painted white, serves as the flagpole stand in front of the building that houses the Greater Sanford Chamber of Commerce.
