The city of Casselberry is named after its founder, Hibbard Casselberry. Casselberry, who had a mechanical engineering degree from Yale, came to Seminole County, where his mother had a winter home, in the 1920's.

He wanted to participate in the growth of the local fern industry and originally purchased some acreage near Lake Orienta. After selling that land, he purchased hundreds of acres in the area which was incorporated as a town in 1940.

He envisioned the development of the town and, after the end of World War II, Casselberry began building homes in the area for the returning military and for others who came to Florida to retire. Consistent with his vision, he started the utility system to provide water and sewage treatment and donated land for a city hall. And, he established the town's cemetery and formed a volunteer fire department which started out with a truck donated by his mother.

The city was incorporated in 1965 and today, it has a population of over twenty four thousand.

New York merchant Moses Levy owned hundreds of thousands of acres of Florida land before Spain ceded Florida to the United States. Levy's holdings from Spanish land grants included all of modern day Winter Springs.

In the 1880's, the trading camp at Tuscawilla Landing, on Lake Jesup in present day Winter Springs, was one of the last southern stops for St. Johns River steamboat traffic. Tuscawilla Landing was located to the east of the namesake High School and City Hall, and behind the namesake Town Center, at the end of the continuation of Tuscawilla Road past SR 434.

In 1959, Winter Springs was but a village with fewer than 600 residents when it was incorporated as North Orlando. By 1972, the residents were tired of the North Orlando name. That year, the residents held a referendum which resulted in the name change to Winter Springs.

Winter Springs is the largest, by area, of the seven incorporated cities of Seminole County. And today, it has more than thirty three thousand residents.
