If you reside in Oviedo and need the assistance of a
Seminole County Criminal Defense Lawyer... We Can Help You
In State Court, civil cases are usually filed in the county where at least one of the parties involved resides. But, criminal cases are not always filed in the county of residence of the person accused. Criminal law cases are usually filed and tried in the county, in other words, in the venue, in which the criminal offense charged is alleged to have occured.
There are cases, however, in which the prosecution does not know the precise physical location where the criminal offense was allegedly committed.

Pursuant to the Florida Constitution and to Florida Statute, in those types of cases, the person may be charged in two or more counties conjunctively. Then, the acused would have the "privilege" of electing in which of those counties he or she wants the trial to be held and would then present his or her
criminal defense in the county selected.

As you know, Oviedo is located in Seminole County, Florida. So if a crime allegedly took place within the Oviedo city limits, the state criminal case would usually be filed with the Court in Seminole County. And naturally, the person accused would defend against the allegations there, aided of course by his or her criminal defense lawyer.

Even if the person accused actually resided in another county or another state, this would likely be the case. So the Oviedo residence of the person accused would not revelant to where the criminal case would usually be filed.

This applies to
juvenile delinquency or juvenile defense cases and to adult felony and misdemeanor criminal cases.

The city of Oviedo was named by its first postmaster, Andrew Aulin. Aulin, who was born in Sweden, was an early settler and shop owner in the Lake Jesup community, part of which became the city of Oviedo.

In 1879, residents of the soon to be named Oviedo area needed an easily accessible post office and Aulin decided to file the requisite paperwork. Aulin wanted a unique name for the post office and wanted a Spanish name that would go with the Spanish name of the state.

He decided to name the post office Oviedo after the University of Oviedo located in northern Spain. Some say Aulin actually visited the University of Oviedo. However, others say he just liked the sound of the Spanish pronunciation of "Oviedo."

Regardless of whether Aulin visited the University of Oviedo or not, the residents kept the Oviedo name, and in 1925 incorporated the city of Oviedo. At that time, Oviedo had roughly 800 residents. Today, the city of Oviedo has over thirty four thousand residents.
