If you live in Sanford and need the help of a
Sanford Criminal Defense Lawyer... We Can Help You
State civil cases are typically filed with the Court in the county in which one of the parties lives. However, criminal cases are not filed with a particular Court based on where a person lives. Criminal law cases are typically filed and tried in the venue, that is, in the county, in which the criminal offense was allegedly committed.
Sometimes, though, the prosecution does not know exactly where the criminal offense was supposedly committed, such as when near the county line or in a body of water.

Pursuant to Florida Statute and the Florida Constitution, in cases like those, the person may be charged conjunctively in two or more counties. Then, the person accused, after selecting in which of those counties he or she wants the trial to be held, would present their
criminal defense in their county of selection.

Sanford is, of course, located in Seminole County, Florida. So, if a person is accused of a crime that was allegedly committed in Sanford, the state criminal case would typically be filed with the Seminole County Court and the person, with the aid of their criminal defense lawyer, would defend against the allegations there.

This would likely be the case even if the person actually lived in another county or another state. So the fact that a person lives in Sanford, or anywhere else for that matter, is irrevelant to where a criminal case will typically be filed and tried.

This applies to adult misdemeanor and felony criminal cases and to
juvenile delinquency or juvenile defense cases as well.

So if someone from Sanford, for example, was charged with a criminal offense which was supposedly committed in Volusia County and Seminole County, it would be up to the accused to elect whether to go to trial in Seminole County or Volusia County. Of course, the prosecution would still have to prove venue.

The city of Sanford was founded by American diplomat, businessman, and lawyer, Henry Shelton Sanford. Sanford was a direct descendant of Thomas Welles, colonial governor of Connecticut.

Sanford began his work as a diplomat in 1847, at the ripe old age of 24, when he was appointed Secretary of the American Legation in St. Petersburg. Subsequently, Sanford held a number of other diplomatic posts including one in Frankfurt, Germany, and another in Paris, France. Then, in 1861, Sanford was appointed the United States Minister to Belgium. Sanford was President Lincoln's first diplomatic appointment. Sanford maintained this post until 1869.

In 1870, Sanford purchased the 23 square mile "Sanford Grant" and subsequently founded Sanford. In 1875, Sanford built two hotels, the Sanford House and the Monroe House. Shortly thereafter, in 1877, Sanford was incorporated as a city.

In 1913 the Florida Legislature established Seminole County with Sanford as the county seat. Today, Sanford has a population of over fifty three thousand residents.
