How to Find a Good Lawyer – Part 2
Gather Some Background Information
After you have compiled the list of lawyers that you think may be able to help you, you should think about what you want to know about each lawyer. As part of your search to find a good attorney, you may consider contacting the State Bar via telephone or checking online to determine if the attorney has been disciplined for some wrongdoing. Also, as part of your search to find a good attorney, you may consider looking up the lawyer online and reading some of the reviews posted. If you decide to read some online reviews, be cautious of placing too much weight on extreme reviews that sound like they may have been posted by an embittered ex and of reviews that sound way too good to be true.

Make Your Official Lawyer List
The next thing you should do in your search to find a good attorney is make a separate list where you can take notes about your contact with each attorney or each lawyer's office. Again, keeping notes of all contact that you can later review will be helpful to you when you are ready to choose a lawyer. Write down the name and number of each attorney you plan to call and leave some space in between the lawyers' names for your notes. Keep in mind that you may have to leave a message depending on when you call and who you are trying to reach. Therefore, having your lawyer list ready may come in handy on a callback by helping you remember who is who. Plus, you may want to keep track of how long it takes for the attorney or the lawyer's office to return your call.

Before Your First Contact
Before you call any of the attorneys on your list, you should think about what you want to accomplish with your call at this stage of your search to find a good attorney. Are you looking to get general information about the law from the attorney? Or are you looking to get information from the lawyer that applies specifically to your situation? If you are looking for information that applies specifically to your situation, chances are that you will need to provide the lawyer with the background and the details of your situation. Otherwise, how could the attorney properly advise you? Therefore, your search to find a good attorney should include some thought as to what information you will need to discuss with the lawyer when you call.

Phone or Office Consultation?
Also, before calling any of the attorneys on your list, another consideration in your search to find a good attorney is whether you want to discuss the details of your situation over the telephone with an attorney you do not know or if you would rather meet with the lawyer in person. On the one hand, discussing your situation with an attorney over the telephone is convenient because you do not need to travel to the lawyer's office to meet with the attorney. On the other hand, meeting in person with the lawyer is likely to provide you with more clues that will help you in your search to find a good attorney and will also be of help when it comes time to choose a lawyer. And those clues about the lawyer and the office are also more likely to help you determine if the attorney really is the right lawyer for you.

The next consideration in your search to find a good attorney is whether you should pay for the initial consultation with the attorney and if so, how much.
